Ambulatory health care accreditation is a process where an external, independent body such as the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) evaluates how well an ambulatory health care organization meets required standards. This peer-based review and evaluation program assesses and improves the quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and the safety of the care delivered by a health care organization. As standards for accreditation have evolved, so have the methods and commitment needed to improve the determinants of health for marginalized communities and their health care clinics. Because AAAHC offers certification only for healthcare practices that demonstrate comprehensive compliance with stated criteria, earning this ambulatory health care accreditation is a vital part of maintaining a well-reputed clinic that provides quality care to the tribal community it serves.
When people talk about accreditation, they often ask, “Why go to the trouble and expense?” One important reason to become accredited is that accreditation represents the “gold standard” in the health care industry. Accreditation demonstrates to your patients that the organization has “passed the test” and is committed to providing high quality care. Accreditation helps to assure that your clinical staff has a healthy environment to work in, thereby improving quality of care, staff morale, and retention of professionals. Improved marketability and image within the local community is another reason to be accredited. Other health providers and organizations in your region look upon accredited facilities as trusted and proven partners in care.

And so you want to gain accreditation …
Once you decide to head down the path of becoming an accredited organization, there are many issues to address and many steps along the way. When I work with a tribal group to gain accreditation for their health care operation, the process will involve gaining perspective from the health board or governing body, the clinic director, medical director, accreditation coordinator, and many others. The process can be lengthy , although the time can vary from one organization to the next. But, as we work together toward your goal of AAAHC accreditation, it will be through well-planned, well-executed steps that will help move your clinic and community to better health outcomes for all.
